Master Program: Photonics and Optical Informatics

Program code: 38.04.04

Department of Electronic Devices

This master program is relevant due to the wide use of photonic and optoinformatic devices and equipment in various branches of industry and everyday life, as well as continuous improvement of optical and optical-electric devices themselves. During the meeting of the Presidium of the Presidential Council for Economic Modernization and Innovations of Russia held on July 7, 2014 in the city of Yekaterinburg, D. A. Medvedev, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation declared photonics a strategically important field: “This field of science and technology, as you know, is very promising. It is related to the use of light emission for various purposes. It is hard to mention a field, where photonics could not be applied, be it now or in future. Such technologies are used for information processing and transfer over optic fiber communication lines and for increased accuracy and quality control of industrial processes. It is widely used in microelectronics, mechanical engineering, lighting engineering, modern architecture, even in show business. It is no coincidence that 2015 is declared a year of light and lighting technologies by the General Assembly of the UN. According to experts, as early as in the nearest future, photonics may serve as the basis for a series of not just pilot but already foundation-laying technologies that will transform industry, medicine, agriculture, and a wide range of other fields”.

Currently scientists all over the world, including the graduates of the master program, develop new directions: laser, integral, fiber, adaptive and non-linear optics, micro- and nanooptics; new generations of lasers, LED, optical materials, devices, systems, etc. The master programs in photonics and optoinformatics field stipulate advanced study of characteristics and physical processes of the interaction of light emission with various systems; physical principles and basic components to register, modulate, deviate, transform, transmit and process the light emission.

The master program is based on the practical experience of TUSUR’s scientists in fundamental research of physical principles of photonics and optoinformatics and their use for the development of devices, based on it.

The master program students, in course of their study, have the opportunity to join the work of a real scientific team, test their skills, solving relevant problems of modern physics, optics and instrumentation. Active participants of such work make reports at regional, all-Russian and international scientific conferences; publish their papers in the national and foreign scientific journals. The research work is being carried out in cooperation with scientists from Vladivostok, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, Minsk, neighboring and non-CIS countries. Upon completion of the master program, the graduates may continue their education with a postgraduate program.

Graduate’s expertise and skills

In course of the study, a student of the master program acquires knowledge, competence and personal qualities that are relevant for professional activity, alongside the following expertise and skills:

  • Mathematical (computer) simulation and optimization of photonic and optoinformatic parameters, based on the developed and available means of research and design, including the standard special software application suites. Practical use of skills and competences to organize research and design work, manage the staff.
  • Development and implementation of function and structural circuits for photonic and optoinformatic devices and systems and determination of technical requirements for various blocks and components; technical processes, operation optimization, quality control methods for photonic and optoinformatic components, devices and systems; information technologies and optimization of automated operation of photonic and optoinformatic components, devices and systems.
  • Design of various photonic and optoinformatic systems, blocks and nodes using computer-assisted design, design estimates and feasibility studies of photonic and optoinformatic design solutions, devices, equipment and systems as per the given requirements; technical processes for the production of electronic devices and materials using automated systems.
  • Marketing and elaboration of business plans for production and sale of new prospective and competitive devices and technologies; participation in feasibility and function-cost study of the market efficiency of the created product.
